What is Dampness?

Dampness is a concept in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), referring to a pathological state where excess moisture accumulates in the body and cannot be properly expelled. Dampness can be categorized into two types:

Internal Dampness: Primarily caused by improper diet, weak spleen and stomach, and metabolic disorders.

External Dampness: Mainly due to living in a damp environment, humid climate, getting wet from rain, and exposure to cold and moisture.

The Harms of Dampness

Accumulation of dampness in the body can lead to various health problems and discomforts, including:

Fatigue and Weakness: People with heavy dampness often feel heavy, tired, and weak, even if they get sufficient rest.

Digestive Issues: Dampness affects the function of the spleen and stomach, leading to loss of appetite, bloating, indigestion, constipation, or diarrhea.

Joint Pain: Dampness retained in the joints can cause pain, stiffness, and discomfort, especially during rainy weather.

Skin Problems: Dampness can lead to skin issues such as eczema, itching, and rashes, and the skin may appear oily and dull.

Edema: Dampness disrupts the body’s water metabolism, causing swelling in the face, limbs, and even the whole body.

Head Heaviness: People with heavy dampness often feel like their head is heavy, sleepy, and have difficulty concentrating.

Decreased Immunity: Dampness can affect the body’s immune function, making people more susceptible to colds and illnesses.

Thick and Greasy Tongue Coating: People with heavy dampness often have a thick, greasy coating on their tongue, usually white or yellow, and may have a sticky feeling in their mouth.
